What is courage? How is courage portrayed in The Kite Runner? Is Amir courageous, even though he thinks he isn’t? Who are the more courageous characters in the novel? What are some instances in your own life where you have displayed courage? Explain and discuss the significance of courage as seen in the The Kite Runner, in three paragraphs or less.
Courage is portrayed in several ways up until Chapter 12. For example, it takes courage to leave the comfort land that Amir had always lived in. Both Baba and Amir lived all their lives in Afghanistan, and it is part of their heritage, but to immigrate to America was not an easy task. In the process, they had to avoid Russian powers, as they were Baba’s worst enemy. The process that they had to go through showed their courage.
Amir is one of the most courageous characters in the story. As a minority in America, he had to step up to challenges that he did not face when he was in Afghanistan or his journey in Pakistan. He had to face harassment by people in the community and people who questioned him about his religion and race. Although he does not feel courageous, he certainly is courageous, willing to be the man that Baba wanted him to be.
Edit: When I said “Amir is one of the most courageous characters in the story”, I was trying to direct it to the point where Amir was about to get married. His courage was not as strong during his childhood years, but his courage to pull Baba out of the shop after trying to steal something is an instance where he has shown to be courageous during his young adulthood years.
